Power Quality Monitoring and control system

Objectives

If we estimate the economic impact of power quality disturbances at the national level, the losses will be from tens to hundreds billions of dollars. This becomes the main driver for power quality management system, which is deployed world-wide for power utilities.

Power Quality Monitoring and Control «Harmonika» («Harmonika PQ») provides an opportunity to:

  • monitor PQ performance indexes;
  • evaluate disturbance levels and PQ deviations for individual power supply points in the monitored network;
  • analyze the impact of PQ on operation of transmission and distribution grids, industrial and consumers networks;
  • support the selection of methods for increasing PQ and to support design phase of technical resources to implement these methods.

«Harmonika PQ» allows identifying the causes of abnormal PQ disturbances from the raw data, assessing the reliability analysis of power supply and diagnosing the impact on conducting equipment as well as choosing effective means to improve PQ.

Scope

«Harmonika PQ» system is highly scalable and can be applied in:

  • transmission and distribution grids;
  • infrastructure companies (railways, oil&gas) and industrial utilities networks;
  • municipal/city and independent distribution companies.

Basic functionality

«Harmonika PQ» provides:

  • on-going measurements (including PQ indexes) on wide range of voltage levels from 0,4 to 1150 kV by synchronized GPS/GLONASS mobile and stationary measuring instruments;
  • acquisition, control, archiving of measurement data and transfer from substation level to control centers system level;
  • forming of statistical characteristics of PQ indexes and standardized reports generation;
  • automated analysis of raw data in order to identify possible reasons for abnormal PQ in electrical grid;
  • modeling and power system analysis based on measurements of PQ disturbances for the evaluation of system impact on the transmission efficiency and power losses and for developing methods to keep PQ indexes within specified limits;
  • representation of current and archived PQ measurements, their characteristics and results of statistical analysis of the raw data;
  • calculation and design of filter devices, system configuration and operation planning schemes to improve the PQ.

Advanced analytical functionality

«Harmonika PQ» includes software packages for advanced analytics. They are used to simulate the electrical network modes, taking into account the impact of disturbance. This network analysis according to the PQ monitoring allows power electricity to get the impact estimation of PQ disturbance in the network and assess their impact on the effectiveness of business processes of network companies and industrial enterprises.

Architecture

«Harmonika PQ» system is a multi-level distributed system of measurement and control installed in substations and distribution points. Substations with a large number of PQ measuring instruments (MI), can be retrofitted specialized controllers for the collection, processing and storage of primary data. By means of a control system is organized the collection and transmission of data from the MI of the substation in the control center, which is implemented analytical processing of measurement results and maintaining long-term archives. The DC is responsible for calculating the general PQ characteristics of SS or power district energy system as a whole, to identify and analyze events such as failures, overloads, voltage interruptions, as well as statistical analysis of data over long periods (up to a month, a year or more).

In addition, at the top level of the system is carried out modeling of electric modes and assesses the combined effect of PQ on the business processes of power grid companies and energy efficiency consumers.

Architecture and basic options for «Harmonika PQ» system:

  • Example 1 for large Utilities based on HV substations managed by Grid Control Centers (see figure);
  • Example 2 for local grids, combining small power facilities with multiple PQ control centers and including PQ MI and data collection servers of processing, analysing and reporting.

Integration Capabilities

For additional information exchange «Harmonika P-Q» has sophisticated integration functions with SCADA, Customer information systems, Market management, power system planning and operation tools, assets managements system. Integration functions are based on the use of IEC CIM (Common Information Model).
